let them eat cake

Since we're going to be out of town for our actual anniversary (in less than 2 weeks! Good gravy!), this week Scott and I pulled the top of our wedding cake out of the freezer.

Things I Have Learned About Freezing Cake
1. It works. Really, really well, actually--at least if you get said cake from Macey's.*
2. If, say, you decide to put real flowers on said cake as a decoration, even if you think they're pretty, DO NOT FREEZE THE FLOWERS WITH THE CAKE. For some reason, cake possesses magical properties which allow it to thaw to the same condition it froze to. Flowers do not have these properties. When you thaw them, they will smell rotten, because they will be a year old. They will also make the frosting smell rotten. This is a Bad Thing.
3. If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of owning a cake with rotten-plant-smelling-frosting, try throwing the cake away. If you are lucky, the cake part itself will conveniently shuck off its nasty frosting exterior, leaving behind a perfectly preserved hunk of double chocolate-raspberry cake. You can then take the unfrosted hunk to campus for a delightful mid-study snack.

* Yes, I did get our wedding cake from Macey's. The grocery store. Because (in this order): 1. Macey's cake is very, very delicious. 2. No, I'm serious. I love cake from Macey's. You should try some sometime. It's dense without being gummy or heavy, rich without being overpowering, a lovely balance between chewy and fluffy, actually. 3. They weren't backed up for 2 months, unlike other bakeries in the area. 4. When I asked about ordering cakes, I actually talked to a real baker. She gave me good ideas and didn't pressure me into anything at all. She didn't even look at me funny when I asked about putting real flowers on it. 5. And, yes, okay, fine, it was relatively cheap. I just didn't feel like spending $500+ on one dessert.
